National Science Olympiad Scholarships

April 21, 2005

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is pleased to host the 21st annual National Science Olympiad May 20-21, and to announce a new scholarship program to reward the winners.

Some 2,400 middle and high school students, representing more than 120 championship teams from across the country, will come to Urbana to compete in more than three dozen events, such as bridge building, computing, chemistry and astronomy.

High school gold medalists (1, 3) and team champions (2, 3) in those events who gain admission to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will be awarded four-year undergraduate tuition waivers.

The program also offers rewards to middle school gold medalists (1) and team champions (2).  If they ultimately apply and are admitted to the Urbana campus, they will receive a $2,000 annual scholarship each of their four years as undergraduates.

As reflected in its selection as host of this outstanding event, Illinois is one of the pre-eminent science and technology institutions in the world, training the best and the brightest students. The winners of this national competition will have shown themselves to be outstanding students – the kind whose curiosity, creativity and energy foster and promote the cutting-edge work for which this campus is known.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign salutes the National Science Olympiad’s mission to improve the quality of science education and to create a passion for science among schoolchildren.

We hope that these scholarships will inspire the nearly 2 million students who compete in NSO events as they explore the wonders of science.
